MobLogic: RNC: Sarah Palin

  • Concerned Patriot · 1 year ago
Neither party is going to deliver what I'm looking for - less government. The McCain camp has the most promises to do so, however his voting record speaks more to what he'll do than his promises. And as usual the dems constantly talk about what they're going to do for you, the poor helpless citizen, which can only lead to more government agencies and more money out of my paycheck.

Want smaller government? Vote Libertarian as a protest vote and then at least be able to claim over the next 4 years that you didn't contribute to the problem :)

All ye leaning toward Obama, do not despair. We recognize this animal, having seen it prowling around the White House the last 8 years. She's prettier and better at reading the prompter, but she's made of Rove and W. blood, and she's put herself in the pit to be torn apart.
We've seen this before and we need to stop falling into their traps. It's not a culture war, it's a presidential race. They DO NOT set the agenda for the vast majority of America, who, incidentally, live in our CITIES and larger towns, not in our small towns.

Also, check out this letter a constituent of Palin's in Wasilla wrote:

Um....not to burst your bubble with FACTS or anything....but according to Wikipedia, 87 million people live in the 262 towns and cities of 100k people or more.

Which, by my math, means that 213 million people live in small towns.

So....a "vast majority live in cities and larger towns"....um....kinda the exact opposite of that, which is exactly what the elites in DC and NYC media will NEVER understand.
  • steveplace · 1 year ago
Don't know if those are good stats. Can you have a city that's really just a suburb of a larger city? Perhaps we need to index the population as a function of density.
  • andyswan · 1 year ago
I'll stop digging until any evidence at all is presented to support
the original claim that I was refuting. :)
  • tallwhitey · 1 year ago
i'm going to hold off judgment until i learn a little more about her and see how she performs in the debates. but curious, lindsay, were there any redeemable qualities you saw that made her a good choice for VP.
  • lindsaycampbell · 1 year ago
If we hadn't, as a nation, just lived through 8 years of a war-loving president- a man who has never acknowledged the failure of his policies, the collapse of our economy and the role his administration has played in it- i might feel more forgiving, but Palin absolutely represents more of the same and I can't tolerate more of the same.

The America I live in is multi-cultural, secular, gay and straight, and every bit as important for me to defend as her's is to her. The difference between our two Americas is that I have room for her in mine, as long as she doesn't tell me what to do with my body, but she doesn't have room for me, and my belief system in hers.

The RNC was almost exclusively a convention of white people. I reject that America as unrepresentative of my experience. The RNC and the Republican party in general advocate religion in government which I reject on the basic of my constitutional rights as an American. Your religion, and your God have no place in my school or my business, in my art or in my family.

Sarah Palin represents the worldview you can ONLY have if you have never tried to step outside your narrow field of vision and understand what it's like to be someone who has an entirely different value system. She is provincial and unsophisticated and does not represent MY America.

Obama and his energized party will take this election but not without slaying this dragon. She and McCain promise more of the dissembling and pretending of the Bush years and I will not stand for it.

We need to take America back from the lying, hypocritical religious right now and close the door on its ugliness forever

"The difference between our two Americas is that I have room for her in mine, as long as she doesn't tell me what to do with my body, but she doesn't have room for me, and my belief system in hers."

Sounds kind of funny coming from the party that has done nothing more than try to find more and more and more room for themselves in our wallets.

If libs would let us opt out of their idiotic programs and fund them themselves....I'd be pretty agreeable that your America has "room for me".
  • lindsaycampbell · 1 year ago
Maybe if conservatives could figure out there is more to life than what's in their wallets I might trust them
  • andyswan · 1 year ago
If liberals could figure out there is more to life than what's in other
people's wallets, I might trust them with determining how much to take.

Actually...again...not to burst bubbles with facts, but it is quite well
substantiated that those in red states give significantly more (%) of their
income to charity than those in blue states.

Most people want to help our fellow man. The difference is that liberals
want to help in the least efficient ways possible....using the other guy's
    money.
  • lindsaycampbell · 1 year ago
Is that the intent, though? Do use as much of other people's money as possible? Of course not. Nor, I'm sure, is it the intent of the Republican party to start holy wars in their bid to protect our oil interests. Doesn't the intent matter?

I haven't been able to research the population inaccuracy you brought up- that more americans live in towns under 100,000 - but, of course, I generally believe wikipedia and apologize for my error. Given that small towns and big towns create people who can't agree on the principles of governance, what could we do to so that more people feel included in our politics?

It all comes back to having a three party system, or an any number party system, so there is middle ground when the two parties begin to look so startlingly different.

Given the situation we're in, I'm going to have to try to figure out why is doesn't bother me if my taxes are raised to begin the process of making healthcare available to ALL OF OUR CITIZENS but it bothers you, and other conservatives enough that you'll vote against it.

The more troubling situation is that McCain, by choosing Sarah Palin, has demonstrated that he's willing to be an anti-maverick to get elected. If that doesn't matter to you, Andy, who will it matter to?

And lastly, Andy: why is the RNC an almost all-white affair? No one seems to want to touch that question but I thought you might be up to the challenge.
  • andyswan · 1 year ago
I do not mind chipping in on the health care of people that need help because of a bad break or single mistake....and I DO chip in on that through the agencies that I feel most comfortable with handling it efficiently.

The Federal Government is NOT on that list. It bungles everything, corrupts everything, and most importantly:

It destroys the incentives for those who strive for excellence in their field (see public schools).

My goal may very well be the exact same as yours, but I completely disagree with the methods that the big-government left wants to use to get there.

McCain's pick of Palin WAS maverick. It was SHOCKING. He picked someone with whom he doesn't always agree, someone who did not bring a big name to the ticket, but that brought a big spirit.

It was certainly more "maverick" than Obama's pick of Biden was "change", no? They both chose someone that made up for their own weaknesses...because they both want to win.

I don't know why the RNC is an almost all-white affair, just as I have no idea why minorities in certain areas have rubber-stamped democrats into power for 40 years without questioning whether or not things are actually improving.

There is no reason to judge a group of people by the color of their skin.

Every human being benefits from liberty, freedom and the protection of safety and opportunity that is the Federal Government's only job.
  • Abe · 1 year ago
If I am following your logic then it's better to choose someone that you disagree with that brings a "big spirit" than to choose someone that makes up for your own weaknesses who you in turn make up for theirs?
  • andyswan · 1 year ago
Age...what I'm saying is McCain did both
  • Abe · 1 year ago
Ah, I somehow missed that. My apologies.

Must be my post-RNC hangover. I can't tell you how excited I am to go back to the normal police presence instead of the occupation force they have had this week, and actually being able to take the quick way home from work.
  • andyswan · 1 year ago
Oh...and on the "how to get people to feel more involved in our governance" question...it is NOT a third party, although that would be nice.

It is the fundamental shift from a powerful FEDERAL government to a powerful LOCAL government system. Votes count more for mayor in small towns, or city council in large cities.

Politicians are more responsive to their neighbors. More efficient with the money of their own community, and more aware of the problems specific to that area.

I agree that government has a large role to play in society...I just disagree that we should cede that role to the largest, furthest removed iteration of government.

THIS is the local/state's rights agenda. Reagan knew it....but he was the last one on the national scene. That's the excitement Palin has brought so far. Let's hope 4 years in DC doesn't do to her what 4 days did to GW Bush.
  • Adam · 1 year ago
"It all comes back to having a three party system, or an any number party system, so there is middle ground when the two parties begin to look so startlingly different."

Since when have the two parties begun to look different?

Last time I checked both parties supported expanding the American Empire, both parties support the Federal Reserve, both parties differ on taxation by a whole 4.5%, both parties care more about corporations than Americans, both parties support spying on Americans.

Other than abortion, this may as well be a single party system.

    Where is the difference again?

"And lastly, Andy: why is the RNC an almost all-white affair?"

Didn't watch any of the speeches prior to Romney then did you?
  • numberoneofficefan · 1 year ago
Obama and his energized party , i think thats all he is. Is a man that can give a good speech but when it comes time to vote. It's going to be " yeah that Obama he gives a great speech and it was fun while it lasted but i see more change in McCain and Palin" honestly Sarah Palin's themes for this election are Change and a Clean Government, demonstrated by her resignation as Ethics Commissioner of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission to expose corruption. Barack Obama's themes for this election are Hope and Change, demonstrated by selecting a 36-year incumbent Senator as running mate.

    And then they came for the trade unionists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist;
    And then they came for the Jews, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew;
And then . . . they came for me . . . And by that time there was no one left to speak up."

You want to get rid of us?

Tell me my lovely Lindsey (I don’t mean that condescending in any way, I really do like you) why is it that we feel exactly the same. The religious right could write that same comment. We feel oppressed and you can find a place in our party but not the other way around. We say keep government out of our lives. We hear you speak of tolerance but we are mocked and called ugly. It reminds me of a black man who was helped by some white men during the Katrina floods. He said “I always thought that whites hated me and I was afraid of them, now I know the truth.”
  • tallwhitey · 1 year ago
i'm not big on religious fanaticism myself, so i can understand your gripe there.

i'd only add that i don't find it necessary or important that everyone be sophisticated or non-provincial. just that there always be a mutual respect for our differences, as long as those differences don't infringe on others 'constitutional' rights.

i'm not sure if this is even relevant, but i will say that the one refreshing aspect of her speech was that i didn't detect any fake smiles, a la mrs. clinton. and i think the press made note of that, saying that she seemed very authentic - so i don't know if they were comparing her anyone else with those statements.

will be interesting how this all plays out to say the least.

p.s. when is the moblogic crew going to come and visit nolalou and myself for some post-hurricane stories? (no me gustav) i'm sure ya'll can find some interesting angle to cover that the general media normally wouldn't consider.
  • albertov · 1 year ago
    Wow Lindsay!

I have a slight suspicion you are not in the undecided camp. You definitely exude a visceral passion.

It seems that for the most part, both candidates (and parties) profess that they want the same thing: a better America. They just differ philosophically as to how to get there.

I find it rather shocking that at the same time you trash Sarah Palin for having a narrow field of vision, you make the case for two Americas according to your beliefs; “MY America,” as you call it, is reserved for those that agree with you while the other America is for those that don’t.

Aren’t you exhibiting the same provincialism and lack of sophistication that you accuse Palin of when you exclude others from YOUR America? Shouldn’t we talk about OUR America where good ideas regardless of their origin are welcome and diversity also means people are free to have their own beliefs?
  • lindsaycampbell · 1 year ago
I hardly think you should be shocked. Many Americans are shocked that someone who is women's rights and anti-gay rights would even be considered for the VP spot, let alone chosen. Let alone someone who is bot of those things AND incapable of crafting a meaninful response to a question about the Bush Doctrine, or what we might do if Israel attacks another country....
My reference to "my" america was about the tolerant way that I see the world (that many people republican and democrat share). I do not believe she is tolerant and, therefore, I do not want to live in an America led by her.
We can argue back and forth about her merits or lack thereof but it will all be water under the bridge on November 4th when tolerant, America-loving democrats, independents and Obama-Republicans tell John McCain and Sarah Palin to take a long trip on the Straight Talk Express to obscurity.

    Cheers!
  • Jamie Parrish · 1 year ago
Lindsay, it's obvoius that you don't check facts before you make profound statements....but do you at least think? Have you ever driven through middle america, or is it just something you feel sorry for as fly over from coast to coast. Palin reminds me of myself. I find her inspiring as a small town mother, but most of all I find the reaction to her by urban snobs like you disgusting. This is one small town union democrat who will be pulling the mccain lever in the fall....and I'm not alone.

    Sincerely,

    Jamie Parrish
  • lindsaycampbell · 1 year ago
That's fine, Jamie, you do that. Let the Republicans and Bush lie to your face for 8 years and use your children's future economic stability to fund a war that protects their own economic interests, then let them run a candidate who is openly anti- women's rights and anti-gay rights, then reward them all with you vote. You're lucky "provincial" is the only name I called Sarah Palin.

Do you really think, Jamie, that the billionaire at the top of that ticket cares about you, the small town working mother? Or does he just care about your vote? And is Sarah just on the ticket to ensure that you stop thinking long enough about what the Republicans have done for us the last 8 years? If so, then the billionaire has you just where he wants you.

I want a mixed-race, Harvard educated, former community activist and senator to take office and reform our healthcare system and repair our reputation in the world (cause it's a big world out there). If that makes me a snob, bring it on.
  • Kim · 1 year ago

I don't see myself in Palin, and I'm was raised in a small town. I wrote a little something yesterday about the "Palin is 'every woman'" narrative the republicans are trying to push.

  • steveplace · 1 year ago
Or maybe both sides should stop using such heated, emotional rhetoric, as it distracts from the issues at hand. It's this kind of nonsense, this partisanship that does no good to help the citizens of this country.

Perhaps we should all take a step back and go over this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cognitive_...

For example... your letter from one person is not a representative sample, so it should not be used as an example of what she is about.
  • lindsaycampbell · 1 year ago
The reason it's emotional, steveplace, is because there is a great wrong being done- if you don't get emotional about that, then what? I'm in Canada right now and Canadians can't understand how our next election could even be a close one, given how much the Bush-Cheney administration has damaged our economy and our reputation around the world. The repercussions of that damage have only begun to be felt.
If you never leave the US, I guess it doesn't matter to you how much America is hated around the world, but if you do (and many more of us will as our world flattens) it is a dire, and very emotional issue.
  • steveplace · 1 year ago
Because emotional arguments are the most persuasive and the most damning when trying to convince someone to pick a side.

At the RNC, they had a 5 min video showing 9/11 clips that were violent and intended to make people hurt. Was there any intellectual basis for this? No, it was bullshit. And it seems that the majority of arguments found on both Reddit and FreeRepublic have anything to do with the policy that the respective sides are pushing forward.

Very few people know their positions on tax policy or Middle East relations, nor do they care to. They want to hear about how Obama supposedly went to a Madrassah, or how many houses McCain owns.

And since you are part of the fourth estate, I will hold you to a higher standard of reporting.

Political opinion is important, but there needs to be substantiative fact to back up your opinion. This political arena is awash with confirmation biases based on little evidence, and I'd like to see that change.

And way to go on the assumption that I don't travel. Or have any awareness of international perception on our country right now. And the assumption that you don't travel outside the country you're not aware of the aforementioned statements.
  • lindsaycampbell · 1 year ago
I hear ya, steveplace, and I apologize if you felt like I was being condescending. I do think strong words are necessary right now because people need to WAKE UP. Most important election of our lifetimes.

The issue that I had with her that convinced me not to support her is that she was looking to ban books from the local public library.

Some people have dealbreakers, and that was mine.
  • andyswan · 1 year ago
I guess that's the problem with basing "dealbreaker" decisions on the internet rumors and smear campaigns of America's "tolerant" and "progressive" Left:

    http://www.newsweek.com/id/157986

    According to factcheck.org:

She did not demand that books be banned from the Wasilla library. Some of the books on a widely circulated list were not even in print at the time. The librarian has said Palin asked a "What if?" question, but the librarian continued in her job through most of Palin's first term.
  • steveplace · 1 year ago
    You're assuming:

    1) That I'm a liberal
    2) That I'm tolerant

I am offended by these accusations.

For the Palin issue... it's complicated. She was engaging in only "hypotheticals" and "rhetoricals" when she was asking what the librarian would do if she removed books from the library. The librarian was later fired: "[she] was told only that Palin felt she didn’t support her." And then re-hired the next day. So we really don't know Palin's motives when asking these questions.

The game has changed and the democrats don’t even know it. Obama camp unknowingly forced to run against a VP. (How good is Sarah?, her teleprompter failed, it did not stop during applause and she did not miss a beat, check the video she had to glance at her notes) Republicans are now running against the congress which has a lower approval then the president (like shooting fish in a barrel) and the democrats are running against the ghost of GW who is leaving anyway. We republicans hated McCain for not falling in line with GW. And to us he’s a wild card. But he gave us a future to look forward to in Palin. And as Media pundits try to tell us that McCain’s vetting process was flawed, it is clear that his instincts are sharp.

New polls are starting to show Palin more popular then Obama. Obama barely got half of his own party’s vote. Historically Dems reach to the middle for VP to gain more votes not this time, he went further left. Obama MUST win other wise the liberal wing of the Democratic Party will lose power. The feminist narrative is on shaky ground. Liberals have more to lose than anyone here. Democrats can do well with out the wacky elements in the party. Pundits are clearly going after Palin but Obama’s campaign inability to focus an attack reveals how damaging this pick was for them. The 1st press release they thought she was a still a mayor. Hill will not help the less qualified man she was past over for. Clinton wants another shot at this. Then there’s the WMD of same gender marriage.

Biden is condescending and a jerk. The media spares us his stupid comments. He does not know most people have never heard his belittling tone. He’s arrogant enough to go out there thinking people like him like that.
This is fun, no matter which way it goes it’s a no lose setup for Republicans. The economy is going to puke in the next few years. Obama will look like the mayor of New Orleans staring at flooded busses. “Was I supposed to do something?” Unlike New Orleans we will not pick him again.
  • binary_star · 1 year ago
"How good is Sarah?, her teleprompter failed, it did not stop during applause and she did not miss a beat"

I was really hoping to see commentary in these RNC videos as opposed to network retread cuts of the RNC. I would've also like to see on the ground interviews with liberal nut jobs (similar to the bird sex whacko at the DNC) as well as some republicans that sound normal (the same as was done at the DNC). I'm guessing there were more "Joe Lieberman" types at the RNC than the "General for Obama" types at the DNC.

I do feel like each party does a huge disservice to its faithful to bash the other party with the harshest portrayal. It gives credence to the fact that the parties are farther apart than they really are and that there's no hope for TEAMWORK. When the US unifies for any cause, we take care of business.

I think that if you speak to most reasonable people they would agree with:

1 - In the current state of health care, we either need socialized medicine for everyone OR low income people need access to GOOD affordable health care. Did you ever notice that even in economic hard times that the only places that are still building/remodeling are hospitals and medical clinics? Have you seen people turned away with no insurance? (I have and have imagined how I would feel if it was me - imagine that yourself) There is a high profit margin in health care. If you get mad about oil companies making tons of money - you better get mad at the big medical companies - maybe they are reinvesting so much the profit doesn't show up on the balance sheet as readily - but they're pulling in big money.

2 - Gay marriage is NOT an affront to God and IF YOU BELIEVE IT IS: LET GOD SORT IT OUT! Why is it your business? I've heard too many people say that gay's are an abomonation, but not the gay guy that lives in my neighborhood - he's a great guy. Remember way back in the 70's when whites and blacks couldn't marry and it was an abomination to God? When are people going to figure out that big city or not, leave other peoples' business to them. I've lived enough other places to know that EVERYONE is just like you, they want to feel safe, secure and loved.
3 - When times are tough, people need a helping hand - no matter if they're poor OR rich. The McMansion crowd are feeling this right now! Do those people realize that they are taking government hand outs just like the people they call "lazy bums" that are cashing their welfare checks. Do they also realize that getting bailed out of the shady mortgage they took out to pay for the house that makes they feel like they're rich is probably more than most welfare recipients get in a couple of years? How can they say they deserve a bail out any more than a person with lower income?

If we could somehow create a viable third party that is not tied to any of the power hungry Republicans or Dems that are "behind the scenes" that is based in reality...

Man, that felt good to vent...

Why can't people remember the golden rule: Treat others how you would like to be treated...

Let me tell you this. If the Republicans win this election the United-States economie will keep going down and down because the only thing that gets their attention is oil. That means that just like president Bush they are going to put more money into their pockets and less money into things that rely mather like the environment.
  • Concerned Patriot · 1 year ago
Republicans and Democrats have nothing to do with the economy except for taking credit when it's good and blaming others when it's bad.

Try taking a look at the ONLY body that has a real influence - The Federal Reserve.

...and I'm just curious, how does the government spending money on the environment help out our ballooning federal deficit and strengthen the dollar (i.e. a component of our economy)?
  • fredcarle · 1 year ago
you see...if you invest in your country environmental solutions to get away from oil dependencie it will help the economy. The reason being that it will bring good paying jobs to American citizen in a very wide variety of fields instead of giving it to outsiders which means that these people will be paying tax to the government and that also means more money to pay the deficit and less unnecessary wars like the one in Irak which we all know is about oil and that also means less money on sending soldiers to get killed in a war that no body wants....And it keep going on and on and on like that. Would you like more details or would you prefers talking with a politician thats trying to sell you the same BS that president Bush has been selling for the past 8 years which is "we need to go offshore drilling". Well that is BS. Yes that is a good solution for tomorrow but in the long term its only going to bring us faster down to our graves if I may say so.

Let me put it in an other way:

McCain= Oil = Pollution = less jobs = healthy people = bad economy

And dont forget that the only people putting money into their pockets with oil are corporations and Highly placed people of the government. Noting goes back to the population

Obama = Green energy = Lots of jobs = Better Health services = Happy citizens = a very good economy.

That is how I see it.

Mccain is the Hybrid. He needs the Republican Party to get to his destination, but he will hold both parties accountable. Real change will happen when he gets elected.

We all witnessed change with the Republican Convention. Joe Lieberman a prime time speaker. WOW. Lindsay has your opinion of Joe CHANGED, since when he was a candidate with Gore?

Palin's first born son is going to Iraq. First born son. What's Biden's son military record? You need to download some Creedence (fortunate son- It ain't me, It ain't me!!) to understand whose serving the country and who is using it. Biden represents more of the same or no change.

I know you addressed your comments to Lindsay but I just wanted to chime in.

Capt. Beau Biden is shipping off to the meat grinder as well. Not sure how that affects your vote but it doesn't matter to me one bit.

As for Lieberman, it's not that far of a strech or some bold move for McCain to have him speak there. The bold move was by Lieberman.

I just want to add my own opinion on one thing: To me Al Gore is, was, and always will be a douche. It annoys me that he has somehow become the spokesman for global warming but that's beside the point. Him picking Lieberman (who, incidentally, has always been a douche as well) wasn't shocking given Lieberman is like the 2008 Tipper Gore most likely cost him the election (that and getting strong-armed out of Florida).

Choosing Lieberman as a running mate was the same kind of cynical political pandering that brought us Palin. Let's hope it has the same disastrous result.

the Democratic super delegate thing was created for a reason, to keep democrats from selecting a loser, but Dem could not pull the trigger.

"It is clear that the benefit of those years to Mr. Obama dwarfs what he accomplished. Mr. Kellman said that Mr. Obama had built the organization’s following among needy residents and black ministers, but “on issues, we made very little progress, nothing that would change poverty on the South Side of Chicago.”

The biggest blame goes to the major media for treating him with kid gloves. Dems allowed the alphabet soup media to choose.

Is it too late to get Lindsay into the presidential race?? Now SHE would make a great first female President AND she's a babe, to boot - it's a win-win!!

That was very surreal; I felt like it was a scene out of a movie. She is one of the phoniest people I have ever seen. "Hockey Mom"; are you kidding me? What a stupid, completely irrelevant, and pathetic gimmick.

Thank for letting me know I'm not the only one. I finally decided to watch it after hearing how great a speech it was over and over. Needless to say I was not impressed. It reminded me of assemblies in high school. Its hard not to sound like a straight-up hater but I really just feel like I'm either missing something or we're seeing the effect of "if you repeat something enough it becomes the truth"

Steve she's the real deal. Do you have any idea how many small town mayors that have family's across the country related to that speech?

I don't know what your background is, nor do I give a rat's ass, but a stupid, completely irrelevant, and pathetic gimmick to me equals big time Senator Hillary Clinton crying to win a primary. Now that was an American Moment

I'm late on commenting on this, as I'm just getting back home from escaping Gustav! (and had no internet for several days after getting back home).

Lindsay, I agree with your comments on Sarah Palin 100%. In addition, she has on more than one occasion said "I told congress thanks, but no thanks to that bridge to nowhere". The problem is that she was FOR that project when she ran for governor, and she had nothing to do with killing it! Congress cut the funding when it became too controversial! She also claimed she's against earmarks, but when she was mayor she hired a Washington Lobbyist and got over 26 million in earmarks for her town of less than 6000!

Politics is breaking down just like the stock market is behaving badly. No strong leadership. Opposites are not opposing, chaos abounds. The shorts and day traders are taking their gains while the reasonable long-term investors are losing their shirts on the day down as they hope for the best.

The big difference is that with a presidential election, how do you keep your position small to adjust for risk? You can't. How do you set a stop loss order? Are we really stuck with only 4 year options for sale? Can I buy a put?
