I hardly think you should be shocked. Many Americans are shocked that someone who is women's rights and anti-gay rights would even be considered for the VP spot, let alone chosen. Let alone someone who is bot of those things AND incapable of crafting a meaninful response to a question about the Bush Doctrine, or what we might do if Israel attacks another country....
My reference to "my" america was about the tolerant way that I see the world (that many people republican and democrat share). I do not believe she is tolerant and, therefore, I do not want to live in an America led by her.
We can argue back and forth about her merits or lack thereof but it will all be water under the bridge on November 4th when tolerant, America-loving democrats, independents and Obama-Republicans tell John McCain and Sarah Palin to take a long trip on the Straight Talk Express to obscurity.

Wow Lindsay!

I have a slight suspicion you are not in the undecided camp. You definitely exude a visceral passion.

It seems that for the most part, both candidates (and parties) profess that they want the same thing: a better America. They just differ philosophically as to how to get there.

I find it rather shocking that at the same time you trash Sarah Palin for having a narrow field of vision, you make the case for two Americas according to your beliefs; “MY America,” as you call it, is reserved for those that agree with you while the other America is for those that don’t.

Aren’t you exhibiting the same provincialism and lack of sophistication that you accuse Palin of when you exclude others from YOUR America? Shouldn’t we talk about OUR America where good ideas regardless of their origin are welcome and diversity also means people are free to have their own beliefs?

Politics is breaking down just like the stock market is behaving badly. No strong leadership. Opposites are not opposing, chaos abounds. The shorts and day traders are taking their gains while the reasonable long-term investors are losing their shirts on the day down as they hope for the best.

The big difference is that with a presidential election, how do you keep your position small to adjust for risk? You can't. How do you set a stop loss order? Are we really stuck with only 4 year options for sale? Can I buy a put?

You're assuming:

1) That I'm a liberal
2) That I'm tolerant

I am offended by these accusations.

For the Palin issue... it's complicated. She was engaging in only "hypotheticals" and "rhetoricals" when she was asking what the librarian would do if she removed books from the library. The librarian was later fired: "[she] was told only that Palin felt she didn’t support her." And then re-hired the next day. So we really don't know Palin's motives when asking these questions.

She did not demand that books be banned from the Wasilla library. Some of the books on a widely circulated list were not even in print at the time. The librarian has said Palin asked a "What if?" question, but the librarian continued in her job through most of Palin's first term.

I'm late on commenting on this, as I'm just getting back home from escaping Gustav! (and had no internet for several days after getting back home).

Lindsay, I agree with your comments on Sarah Palin 100%. In addition, she has on more than one occasion said "I told congress thanks, but no thanks to that bridge to nowhere". The problem is that she was FOR that project when she ran for governor, and she had nothing to do with killing it! Congress cut the funding when it became too controversial! She also claimed she's against earmarks, but when she was mayor she hired a Washington Lobbyist and got over 26 million in earmarks for her town of less than 6000!

Because emotional arguments are the most persuasive and the most damning when trying to convince someone to pick a side.

At the RNC, they had a 5 min video showing 9/11 clips that were violent and intended to make people hurt. Was there any intellectual basis for this? No, it was bullshit. And it seems that the majority of arguments found on both Reddit and FreeRepublic have anything to do with the policy that the respective sides are pushing forward.

Very few people know their positions on tax policy or Middle East relations, nor do they care to. They want to hear about how Obama supposedly went to a Madrassah, or how many houses McCain owns.

And since you are part of the fourth estate, I will hold you to a higher standard of reporting.

Political opinion is important, but there needs to be substantiative fact to back up your opinion. This political arena is awash with confirmation biases based on little evidence, and I'd like to see that change.

And way to go on the assumption that I don't travel. Or have any awareness of international perception on our country right now. And the assumption that you don't travel outside the country you're not aware of the aforementioned statements.

you see...if you invest in your country environmental solutions to get away from oil dependencie it will help the economy. The reason being that it will bring good paying jobs to American citizen in a very wide variety of fields instead of giving it to outsiders which means that these people will be paying tax to the government and that also means more money to pay the deficit and less unnecessary wars like the one in Irak which we all know is about oil and that also means less money on sending soldiers to get killed in a war that no body wants....And it keep going on and on and on like that. Would you like more details or would you prefers talking with a politician thats trying to sell you the same BS that president Bush has been selling for the past 8 years which is "we need to go offshore drilling". Well that is BS. Yes that is a good solution for tomorrow but in the long term its only going to bring us faster down to our graves if I may say so.

Let me put it in an other way:

McCain= Oil = Pollution = less jobs = healthy people = bad economy

And dont forget that the only people putting money into their pockets with oil are corporations and Highly placed people of the government. Noting goes back to the population

Obama = Green energy = Lots of jobs = Better Health services = Happy citizens = a very good economy.

That is how I see it.

Thank for letting me know I'm not the only one. I finally decided to watch it after hearing how great a speech it was over and over. Needless to say I was not impressed. It reminded me of assemblies in high school. Its hard not to sound like a straight-up hater but I really just feel like I'm either missing something or we're seeing the effect of "if you repeat something enough it becomes the truth"

The reason it's emotional, steveplace, is because there is a great wrong being done- if you don't get emotional about that, then what? I'm in Canada right now and Canadians can't understand how our next election could even be a close one, given how much the Bush-Cheney administration has damaged our economy and our reputation around the world. The repercussions of that damage have only begun to be felt.
If you never leave the US, I guess it doesn't matter to you how much America is hated around the world, but if you do (and many more of us will as our world flattens) it is a dire, and very emotional issue.
